How to Create the Miniature Illusion

  1. Upload the Right Photo: The trick to tilt-shift starts with the photo. Drag and drop an image taken from a high vantage point looking down. Photos taken straight-on will look like a bad Instagram filter; you need that overhead “God’s eye” angle to sell the diorama effect.
  2. Set the Focal Band: Use the Focus Position (Y-Axis) slider to place the sharp band over your main subject (e.g., a specific car on a street). Shrink the Focus Size (Width) to make the depth of field shallower, which makes the world feel “tinier.”
  3. Dial in the Optics: Increase the Lens Blur (Bokeh) to melt away the background and foreground. If your subject is on a diagonal—like a winding road or a bridge—use the Band Rotation slider to align the sharp focal plane with the subject.
  4. Apply the “Toy Pop”: Miniature models are painted with glossy, vibrant colors, while real life is often muted by atmospheric haze. Crank up the Paint Saturation and Toy Contrast to give your scene a vibrant, plastic look.

The brain attempts to reconcile the visual data and decides that the city, landscape, or crowd must actually be a miniature model.

  • A High Angle: Shoot from a balcony, a bridge, a tall building, or a drone. The camera needs to be looking down at a roughly 45-degree angle.

Why does my photo just look blurry instead of like a toy?

You likely need to push the colors further. Real life has atmospheric haze that washes out distant objects. Toys do not. Try pushing the Paint Saturation to at least 150% and the Toy Contrast to 120% to strip away the realism and make the subjects look like painted plastic.
