What is Cross-Processing (XPro)?
Before digital photography, all photographs were shot on physical film and developed in darkrooms using complex chemical baths. Different types of film required entirely different chemical processes to develop correctly. For example, standard color negative film (like Kodak Gold) is developed using the C-41 process, while slide film (used for projectors) requires the E-6 process.
Cross-Processing (XPro) is the deliberate act of taking film meant for one chemical process and developing it in the wrong chemicals.
When photographers intentionally make this “mistake,” the chemical mismatch produces wild, highly stylized results. The shadows become incredibly dark, the contrast shoots up, and the colors shift dramatically—often turning skies neon cyan, grass yellow, and shadows purple. It became a hallmark aesthetic of the 1990s grunge era and the Lomography photography movement.

How to Get the Analog Look Digitally
Recreating a true chemical distortion digitally is difficult. Basic photo filters just lay a flat color tint over an image, which looks fake and washes out the contrast.

Why did my photo become so dark and grainy?
True cross-processing destroys a lot of the visual data in an image, resulting in crushed blacks and heavy contrast. If the effect is too severe, lower the Film Contrast slider, or reduce the Process Intensity to blend some of your original, clean digital photo back into the chemical edit.
